How do you guys name your characters?

I've always been horrible at it.  When I look back at the stories I go ugh.  The names always seem to stick out like a light blinking the word STOOPID over and over again.

I especially like that Patrick doesn't like Palahniuk, and then insists that
he names all his characters after Palahniuk's most famous one.

It isn't my fault he stole a good name for a ridiculous character.

I hate naming characters. The thought of naming more than five people in a story makes me shrink away from writing it.

i sit there and try to think of names, then see if they fit. sometimes i get rid of them because i know someone with that name, or i've given a character that name already and i dont want to use it again.

othertimes its really retarded, like i can't think of a name so i think of qualities and see if that helps, eg - one person was really good, helped heal people ect so Angela, angel, with an extra A, then i think hmm, cant think of anything better so thats her name.

Sicily Rogers (untitled short story)
Cookie ("Cookie's In The Kremlin")
Melena ("Our Future Has Arrived")
Miss Patagia ("Miss Patagia")
John Hinde ("Ironies of Ireland")
Sister Mary Catherine ("Ironies of Ireland")
Holly ("Holly's Hood")
Dayshan ("Karma Crossing")
Lily ("Freedom's House")
Little Moses ("Freedom's House")
omnipotence ("wishing the old soul would die")
Patch
Mazie
Woody
& Grazie (all from, "Groundhog Patch {A True Story}")

Jenifer,
I penned a lot of short stories when I was in my early 20's..My first heroine was Sicily Rogers. I'm paternally Sicilian and maternally Scot and Irish, so that may explain that one.

"Cookie's in the Kremlin", was about a First Lady having an affair with a Soviet Premier.

Patch, Mazie, Woody and Grazie, were actual groundhogs. I just gave them names. Patch  was easy, as he had a patch of fur missing on the back of his neck..fur he'd lost in coyote tug-o-war. Mazie was his mate; Woody, his son; Grazie, his daughter.

Dayshan, was the name I chose for a purveyor of crack cocaine.

omnipotence, "was a free soul.."

Ciao
